General objectives

Main Goal

The course Legal Psychology, prepares the trainee for psychology analysis, according to the legal philosophy acting on the main element of the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency.

Moreover, at the end of this training programme Legal Psychology, the learner will acquire the following skills:

1) Provide assistance during the legal analysis as regards minor;
2) Acquire information in the case of alleged abuses;
3) Gather and interpret information acquired during interventions carried out by operators (e.g. protected listening, appraisals, etc.);
4) Effectively communicating with a wide audience of stakeholders (i.e. patients, commissioners for children, ministers, operators, Psychologists, police and lawyers amongst others), with respect and sensitivity to socio-cultural diversity, using a variety of media;
5) Manage all aspects of minor legal survey;
6) Manage cases in which the minor is a victim of crime, mistreatment and/or sexual abuse;
7) Manage cases in which the minor is exposed to family conflict dynamics in both separation and parental alienation;

With regard to the knowledge acquired by the students during the course, these include a thorough understanding of:

– Juvenile Delinquency;
– Child Sexual Abuse;
– Separation and Custody of Children.

They will also know the aspects related to the work of operators and relevant experts in the context of minors.

With regard to the competences, the students will acquire the following during the course:

  • How to interact with the patient from a psychological point of view.
  • What is the role of the psychologist in the legal field.
  • Develop a commitment to lifelong learning, recognising the historical development and evolution of the profession, and how this integrates with contemporary practice.

Entry requirements

The entry requirement for this course is an MQF Level 6 Qualification in one of the following Degrees:

– Psychology;
– Nursing Science;
– Law;
– Sociology;
– General Medicine; or
– Human Science.

Moreover, the course Legal Psychology, will be taught in English; therefore, a B2 level of English is required for participants  to ensure the successful and effective understanding of the training.

Assessment

The training programme Legal Psychology, is made of four modules which are delivered over 30 part-time classes of contact learning in a classroom environment and practice lessons. Students will be provided with Power Point presentations as well as detailed hand-outs and other materials useful to support their learning experience, especially considering the legal aspect of the course.

Moreover, practical experience in this course is foreseen to simulate a Group Psychology Session, in which each member of the group will play different roles such as the lawyer, the client, the magistrate or the Technical Consultant.

Self-study hours: 87 hours
Practice Hours: 24 hours
Assessment Hours: 3 hours
Assessment procedures: Participants will be assessed by means of:

  • A Final Multiple Choice Test, with question about all the arguments studied during all the course. This assessment will be done at the end of the Course (i.e. at the end of the 4th module) and it will last 2 hours.
  • A Final Oral Presentation in Power Point (min 5 max 15 slides) about an argument studied during the course. This assessment will be done at the end of the Course (i.e. at the end of the 4th module) and it will last 1 hour/student.Moreover, attendance at classes is compulsory for 80%of the overall course.

Only students with 80% of attendance can access to the final assessments.

Course Modules

This module will focus on psychology in general and how it fits in the legal sector.
More specifically, the module will include the following main topics:

– Birth and History of Legal Psychology;
– Various areas of application of psychology in the legal field within the context of children;
– The use of psychology in the legal-punitive sector;
– The use of psychology in the civil-legal sector;
– Exhibition of the different sectors of legal psychology (for example judicial, legal, criminological);
– Introduction to the role of the psychologist and of psychology in the evaluation of cases of legal responsibility, social danger, ability to react to judgment and sexual abuse;
– Psychological work in canonical surveys, separations and child custody, psychological damage, stalking, mobbing and bullying;
– The listening and/or possible interventions of the psychologist with the child offender and victim of crime.

Learning Outcomes Legal Psychology:

– Interact with a person, according to the main methods of the psychological approach;
– Interact with a child in the legal field;
– Develop in autonomy psychological techniques, among these studied, to be used in various cases;
– Relate and intervene autonomously following a crime or when he or she is a victim of crime.
– Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the different area of legal psychology;
– Apply the psycho-sociological approach in the legal field to analyze the behavior of the people involved in the case;
– Apply the approaches designed to interact with a child;
– Apply the techniques learned to collaborate in the assessments carried out in the legal field.
– Examine different types of personalities and behaviors;
– Understand which approach to use in the legal field according to the personalities involved;
– Understand which approach / technique to use with a minor;
– Understand and interpret psychological expertise;
– Understand which are the important aspects that emerge form a psychological interview for the purpose of analyzing the specific case in question;

Teaching procedures Legal Psychology: 

The module is taught through a combination of delivery methods, namely face-to-face contact hours in a classroom environment, practical training and self-study. Students will be provided with Power Point presentation notes as well as detailed hand-outs and other materials useful to support their learning experience, especially considering the legal element of the course.

During Practical Hours, students will read, together with the lectures, some example of cases, to learn how to interpret them and what are the roles of each actor. It will last 2 hours. They will be divided in small groups and the will do role playing, simulating the socio-psychological methods analysed. In this way they will better understands the role of each actors in a case. It will last 2 hours.

Assessment procedures Legal Psychology: 

This Module is assessed through a Multiple Choice test at the end of the course through which the lecture will assess the knowledge related to this course. He will also put in the test some small description of cases with questions regarding the actors of it and the psychological techniques studied in the module. There will be also an oral examination at the end of the course, for whih the student can choose one od the arguments faced during the whole course.

Therefore, the assessment methods and weightings are as follow:

– Multiple Choice Test: 70%;
– Oral Presentation: 30%.

This module will focus on the judicial response to juvenile delinquency.
The main objective is to enable the student to learn how to collect information about a crime through an expert.

More specifically, the module will include the following main topics:

– The Organization of Juvenile Criminal Justice in comparison with European juvenile legislation;
– Juvenile Deviance: history and theories of reference;
– Judicial intervention with the minor;
– The criminal report on the child offender.

Learning Outcomes Legal Psychology,:

– How to intervene when working with adolescent deviant problems;
– Read and interpret an expert report prepared by sector specialists;
– Understand how certain factors influenced the behavior of the child involved in a phenomenon of juvenile delinquency;
– How to intervene in the judiciary concerning the minor involved;
– Contribute, through psychological sessions with the child, to the definition of the case in analysis.
– Evaluate written reports in a case of child deviance;
– Demonstrate understanding of what a phenomenon of juvenile deviance is and when this occurs;
– Demonstrate understanding of juvenile criminal justice;
– Intervening against juvenile deviance;
– Collect information regarding a case of juvenile deviance.
– Understand and express their opinion on theories of experts in the field of juvenile deviance;
– Express an opinion in the context of a discussion with experts in the field in relation to juvenile deviance;

This module will focus on the psychological intervention in the legal field in cases of child abuse, with particular attention to child sexual abuse.

More specifically, the module will include the following main topics:

– The role of the expert psychologist in a crime of child abuse;
– Information gathering techniques in contact with the child victim of abuse (oriented clinical interview, Stepwise Interview, Cognitive Interview, CBCA, etc.);
– Protected listening;
– The probative incident;
– Test to be used in case of abuse: indications and limits;
– The appraisal in case of child abuse: how to carry it out.

Learning Outcomes Legal Psychology:

– How to interact with the alleged child victim of abuse;
– Decide independently what expertise to carry out;
– Assess independently the survey carried out and which evidence of crime of abuse emerged during the same;
– Apply different jurisdiction to acquire evidence of crime depending on where it took place;
– Ability to independently acquire information during test acquisitions;
– Independently read and interpret an expert’s report in relation to a specific case of child abuse.
– Demonstrate capacity to decide what expertise to perform according to the specific case;
– Demonstrate capacity to decide whether to carry out the assessment, based on the condition of the alleged child victim of abuse, in particular in the cases of sexual abuse;
– Acquire evidence of crime that shows the actual abuse of the child;
– Perform targeted tests in the case of a sexually abused child;
– Understand when it is appropriate to perform the test and when not;
– Act on the basis of the jurisdictions involved in a specific case.

Teaching procedures Legal Psychology: 

The module is taught through a combination of delivery methods, namely face-to-face contact hours in a classroom environment, practical training and self-study. Students will be provided with Power Point presentation notes as well as detailed hand-outs and other materials useful to support their learning experience, especially considering the legal element of the course.

During Practical Hours, students will read, together with the lectures, some example of cases of child abuse, to learn what the role of the psychologist is and how to apply the test techniques during the interviews. They will watch videos about the “protect listening” and the will read examples of interviews about the assessment of the child’s abuse. It will last 3 hours.

They will be divided in small groups and they will do role playing, simulating cases of child abuse. In this way, they will better understand how to interact during an interview with the child and how to collect information to write a report. It will last 5 hours.

Assessment procedures Legal Psychology: 

This Module is assessed through a Multiple Choice test at the end of the course through which the lecture will assess the knowledge related to this course. He will also put in the test some small description of cases with questions regarding the actors of it and the psychological techniques studied in the module. There will be also an oral examination at the end of the course, for whih the student can choose one od the arguments faced during the whole course.

This module will focus on the psychological intervention in the legal field in cases of parental separation and custody of children.

More specifically, the module will include the following main topics:

– Different models of family, conjugality and parenting;
– Marriage and the family;
– Problems related to marital conflict;
– Marital conflict and Parental Alienation;
– How justice intervened in separation problems: the custody of minors;
– Use of tests in the case of parental separation and subsequent child custody: which tests to use (MMPI-2: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2; APS-I: Assessment of Parental Skills-Interview; LTPc: Lousanne Trilogue Play Clinic);
– Mediations to be carried out with the child involved in a custody process;
– Office Technical Consultancy and Technical Consultancy tailored to a specific partner with regards to child custody in a case of parental separation;

Learning Outcomes Legal Psychology:

– How to manage marital conflict;
– How to interact with the child who will be given for adoption;
– How to interact with the couple in which the conflict arose;
– Decide independently which test to perform and which mediation technique to use to dialogue with the minor who will be entrusted;
– Independently evaluate the tests carried out and, on the basis of the results, draw up a consistent report for the purposes of the custody of the child;
– Independently read and interpret an expert’s report in relation to a specific case of child custody.
– Demonstrate knowledge of how to decide which mediation techniques and tests to carry out according to the specific case;
– Acquire evidence during mediations, relevant for the purposes of awarding decisions;
– Interpret the phenomenon of parental alienation;
– Autonomy in carrying out family mediation;
– Use the right mediation/apportionment technique according to the personality of the child and/or of the couple in conflict;
– Carry out psychological tests to gather information necessary for the purposes of custody;
– Draw up reports on the tests and mediations carried out.

Students will be provided with Power Point presentation notes as well as detailed hand-outs and other materials useful to support their learning experience, especially considering the legal element of the course.

During Practical Hours, students will read, together with the lectures, some expert’s report about cases of separation and adoption; in this way they will understand how to interpret and analyse them. It will last 3 hours.

They will be divided in small groups and the will do role playing, simulating interviews to child adopted and/or separation cases. In this way, they will learn how to apply the techniques studied to do interview and the mediation techniques to dialogue both with the child and with the couple. It will last 5 hours.

Assessment procedures Legal Psychology: 

This Module is assessed through a Multiple Choice test at the end of the course through which the lecture will assess the knowledge related to this course. He will also put in the test some small description of cases with questions regarding the actors of it and the psychological techniques studied in the module. There will be also an oral examination at the end of the course, for whih the student can choose one od the arguments faced during the whole course.
